| The
164 body was designed by Pininfarina, and was based
on the Type Four chassis shared with the Lancia
Thema, Fiat Croma, and Saab 9000. The frame was
galvanized steel, which was intended to solve the
rust problems found in other Alfa Romeo offerings,
such as the Alfasud and GTV. The 164 had front wheel
drive, which disturbed some Alfa Romeo purists at
the time, but the driving and handling was well-liked
by most consumers. The engine was a 2.0 L Twin Spark,
which had dual spark plugs for each cylinder. There
was also a 2.0 L 8 valve petrol turbo. A 2.0 L V6
Turbo was developed for some markets, based on the
3.0 L and with an engine management system by Bosch.
Because the Lancia Thema 8.32 and certain smaller
Ferraris share the same chassis and engine and transmission
mounting points, putting a Ferrari engine in a Alfa
Romeo 164 is possible, turning this car into a high-performance
speedster. |
