| Pininfarina,
the Italian design firm, designed the body style
for the Spider. The original engine was a 1570cc
based on the Alfa Romeo twin camshaft 4 cylinder
engine. Total output was just 105 hp, but with disc
brakes and independent front suspension the handling
was excellent. In 1967 the American market got Spica
mechanical fuel injection. The US also got a special
edition Spider dubbed The Graduate in honor of the
hit film that helped sell thousands of cars. The
Spider went through a few changes during its run,
the most notable being the boattail rear being changed
to a flat rear in the 1970s. The original Spider
was discontinued in 1993, and was replaced the next
year by the Alfa Romeo GTV, which has a much more
modern design and few elements reminiscient of the
original Spider. |
