| The
AMC Gremlin is actually the first American car classified
as a subcompact. It was made from 1970 to 1978,
with over 600,000 Gremlins sold during that time.
The man who designed the Gremlin did so by chopping
off the back of an AMC Javelin, sketching his idea
on the back of an airplane's air sickness bag. |

| The
odd shape of the Gremlin makes it less useful than
modern subcompacts. The front seats are the same
size as a full-size car, while the back seats are
barely able to fit children. The cargo area was
smaller than that found in a Volkswagon Beetle.
The Gremlin had the widest range of engines of any
production car, ever. The smallest was a 2.0 L four-cylinder
made by Porshce, while the largest was a 5.0 L V8
that could help the Gremlin go 0-60 in 8.5 seconds.
Despite the odd shape, the Gremlin was very aerodynamic
for its time. The AMC Gremlin has been maligned
because it looks funny and some had poor performance
numbers, but it has a cult following among owners,
who collect them, share them, and swap parts with
one another. |
