| Many
people will recognize the Austin FX4 as the classic
London black cab. For those that have never taken
a taxi in London, the FX4 appears to be just another
quirky small European car, but it also considered
a collectible among nostalgic car buyers. |

| The
FX4 was the successor to the Austin FX3. The FX4
had an Austin 2.2 L diesel engine and a Borg-Warner
automatic transmission. The car underwent a style
change in 1968, and the engine was bored out to
2.52 L in 1971 and the model was officially called
the FX4D. Carbodies took over production of the
FX4 in 1981, calling it the Carbodies FX4. A popular
engine replacement among owners is the 2977cc diesel
made by Perkins / Mazda. London Taxis International
took over production of the FX4 in the mid-1980's,
and the model name became the FX4S and used a 2.5
L diesel engine made by Land Rover. The FX4 was
eventually replaced by the TX1. |
