518, 520, 520i, 520-6, 525, 528, 528i, 530i, and
M535i were sold between 1972 and 1981. These were
considered first generation. The second generation
included the 518, 518i, 520i, 524d, 524td, 525e,
525i, 528i, M535i, and M5 and were sold until 1988.
The third generation used the E34 body style, which
was produced until 1995. The 5-Series was continued
in 1997 with the E39 body style. In 2004 the E60
body style came into production. The E60 is the
current body style. Use

have ranged from an inline 4 cylinder to a 32 valve
