| The
BMW M3 line has been produced since 1986. It started
with the E30 M3 - a model that stayed around until
1991. The E36 took over the line as the M3 continued
to provide a spicier upgrade to the 3
Series line. |

| The
M3 line began with a 16 valve DOHC inline 4 (I4)
engine. The original produced 195 hp, but later
versions of the first generation got a revamped
engine producing over 235 hp. Top speed for those
engines was 140 and 150 mph, respectively. The second
generation M3's were not sold in the United States
until 1995. In 1998 the M3 was sold as a 4 door
sedan and a convertible. Top speed on this generation
was electronically limited to 155 mph. With it's
inline 6 engine and small body, it's safe to say
it can go much faster with those limitations removed,
probably upwards of 180 mph. The E46 M3 introduced
in 2001 featured a 3.2 L S54B32 engine, and was
the top performing M3 ever produced. It's still
speed-limited, but it can go 0 - 60 mph in 4.9 seconds.
The next generation M3 is expected to have 425 hp
and will likely be released in 2007. A used BMW
M3 will vary in price depending on the generation.
Used first and second generation M3's are relatively
cheap, and parts can be found online (see left side
of this page). |
