| Since
2000, BMW has sold a mid-size "crossover"
SUV called the X5. It's based on the 5 Series E39
and has an inline 6 or V8 engine. The X5 has all
wheel drive. There is also a diesel engine available
outside the United States. It's direct competition
is the Mercedes-Benz M-Class. |

| The
production of the BMW X5 really got rolling when
BMW purchased Rover. Engineers used technology used
in the Range Rover luxury line of SUVs to help them
develop the X5. Unlike the Range Rover, the X5 is
designed for sporty appearance and performance.
It has been criticized because it has very little
interior room for an SUV. The X3 (smaller SUV) and
5 Series (sedan) both have more interior room. The
X5 went through major changes for the 2004 model
year. The all wheel drive was improved so that it
could be transferred to allow 100% power to the
front or rear automatically to provide better traction.
It also got a 4.4i engine that boosted power from
295hp to 325hp. It has been rumored that the 2007
X5 will have dramatic changes, including the possibility
of a R6 engine. The early model X5's are widely
available on the used car market, as are parts (see
the left side of this page). |
