| There
are several firsts associated with the BMW Z3. It
was the first modern production roadster built by
the German manufacturer, and also the first BMW
made in the United States. It was first seen by
the public in the 1996 Bond movie GoldenEye, and
it was in dealerships everywhere a short time later.

| The
Z3 lasted from 1996 to 2002 - when it was replaced
with the Z4. It was developed on the 3 Series platform
using the E36 as its base. It had rear semi-trailing
arm suspension used in the E30. The original engine
was a 1.9 L M44B19 straight-4 that produced only
139 hp. BMW obviously did not think of the car as
a performance vehicle, but rather an inexpensive
entry into the BMW world. This changed quickly,
and by the end of its run there was a 3.2 L S54B32
straight 6 engine available for the M Roadster version
of the Z3. Resale value of the Z3 has remained constantly
steady on the used car market. The retro styling
is popular with both young and older buyers, and
it appears that the car could be a collectible decades
from now. Parts are also widely available, especially
online (check out the links on the left side of
this page). |
