| Buick
produced a midsize car called the Regal from 1973
until 2004. It started out looking a lot similar
to other Buicks, but its image changed after a facelift
in 1976, even though the V8 engine that was most
popular did not change until 1978. |

| The
1978 Regal was smaller than previous versions, but
it featured a turbocharged 3.8 L V6. The smaller
car plus powerful engine combination made it a performance
car popular with people who missed the muscle car
days of the late 60's and early 70's. This engine
became the standard among buyers for the next 9
years. Aerodynamic changes in the early 80's allowed
the car to compete on the NASCAR circuit, where
it had several successful seasons. In 1982 the Regal
Grand National was introduced to honor the model's
NASCAR success. It featured a 200 hp turbocharged
V6 engine and was relatively cheap for just $18,000.
The engine continued to get stronger, and the economical
muscle car started to overshadow Corvette in performace.
For this reason, GM changed the Regal for 1988 and
made it a economy car with very little performance
to brag about. It stayed that way until a supercharged
version became available in 1997 on the Series II
V6 engine. The Grand National versions are very
collectible today, selling for $40,000 or more.
Other Regals are fairly cheap on the used car market,
as are parts. |
