| The
first generation of Rivieras were front engine,
rear wheel drive cars. Of course, as the muscle
car era ended, so did production of most rear wheel
drive vehicles. The Riviera switched to front wheel
drive 1979, and eventually went from GM's A body
platform to the smaller B body in 1977. With a turbocharged
V6 engine, the 1979 Riviera was Motor Trend's Car
of the Year. Sales were around 50,000 in 1979 and
1980. By 1985 sales had reached 65,000. By now it
was using the E-body platform, and it was downsized
in 1986 to a weaker 140 horsepower V6 engine. This
newer generation was noted for having some major
technical advancements, such as touchscreen controls.
The Riviera got big again in 1995 with the supercharged
3800 V6 pumping out 225 hp. The car was discontinued
in 1999, but the final 200 were painted silver and
designated Silver Arrow models. These could be rare
collectibles some day, look for them. Other models
are readily available on the used car market, as
are parts. Start your search with ebay. |
