| The
Buick Special has been an on-and-off model in the
Buick lineup since 1936. It was the entry level
fullsize vehicle in the Buick lineup, easily differentiated
from other Buicks because it had 3 vent ports on
the front quarter panel, compared with 4 on just
about every other Buick model. |

| The
original Special lasted until 1958. It was among
the top selling cars in 1955. It never really ended
production, as Buick renamed all their automobiles
for the 1959 model year. The Special became the
LeSabre. It returned as a new car in 1961 using
the GM A platform. It also had an aluminum block
215 cubic inch V8. In 1962 it became the first American
car to have a V6 engine. The new engine received
raves from critics, and the car won Motor Trend's
Car of the Year in 1962. By the 1970's, the Special
became a subseries of the Century. They can still
be found on the used car and classic car market,
especially on places like eBay, where parts are
also readily available. |
