| The
Eldorado of the 50's was known for its stylish looks
and its high price tag. At $7,500, it was one of
the most expensive American cars ever made. Harley
Earl was behind some of the design, and parts of
it were copied throughout the GM line for many years.
The 1959 Eldorado had rear fins and rocketship taillights
- which is perhaps the most distinctive design cue
on any car ever made. By this time the car cost
over $13,000 new, an astounding price at that time.
By the late 60's the Eldorado had become a central
figure in the "big boat" era of luxury
cars. These cars used the Unified Powerplant Package
and front wheel drive and a 429 V8 engine. Custom
Eldorados from the 70's were often dubbed pimpmobiles.
It got smaller in the 1980's and into the 1990's.
The 2002 Eldorado ETC set the record for the most
powerful front wheel drive car ever, with 300 horsepower.
