| For
20 years, from 1985 until 2005, Chevrolet produced
a boxy minivan called the Astro. It competed in
the minivan market with the Dodge Caravan, Plymouth
Voyager, and Ford Aerostar. |

| Many
people classify the Astro as a full-size van, but
I've always disagreed with that thinking, basing
my argument on the interior cargo size. The fullsize
argument comes from the fact that it has rear wheel
drive, but then again, so did the Aerostar. There
was also a 4WD version. Engines included a 2.5 L
2500 I4 and a 4.3 L Vortec V6. In the 1990's, the
van received a poor crash test safety because the
safety compartment collapsed in a 40 mph test. Despite
this, it has become very popular with the custom
car mods market. They like to drop small block V8
engines into it, add custom wheels, and give it
a more flashy paint job. Used Astro vans can be
found quite easily on the used car market, especially
on online auction sites like eBay. |
