| The
DS was made by French car maker Citroen from
1955 until 1975. It had a futuristic aerodynamic
body design and was actually very technologically
advanced for its time. It was one of the first
cars to have a hydropneumatic suspension. |

| Nearly
1.5 million DS's were sold during its 20 year
run. That means that many of them can still be
found on the used car market, especially those
that specialize in classic cars and European
cars. The US market even had a convertible version
that looks sort of like a goofy mod of an Alfa
Romeo Spider. It did have trouble selling in
the North American market. The problem was that
it carried a luxury car price, but it offered
none of the features Americans expected on luxury
cars, like automatic transmission and air conditioning.
Popular engines included the 1911cc 3 main bearing
and 1985cc 5 main bearing motors. They got significantly
bigger in the 1970's, including the 2175cc and
2347cc found in the DS23. You can find these
cars in several movies, including Frances McDormand's
car in Wonder Boys and Louis' car in Munich.
A DS is also used as a futuristic taxi in Back
to the Future 2. I guess that shows how futuristic
the look really was. If you are looking to buy
one for yourself, or if you already own one,
I suggest you try looking on eBay. They have
several listed at any given time and literally
hundreds of parts. I've noticed the prices there
tend to be much cheaper than car swap meets. |
