The transmission of this car could be controlled
by a Flight-Control lever on the dashboard. It was
not a high performance car, especially by modern
standards, mainly because it weighed a hefty 4,070
lbs, which was normal for luxury American cars of
the day. It was better known for looks than performance,
with tail fins and a two-tone exterior paint job.
It could seat six and still make it from 0-60 in
11 seconds (without the passengers inside, of course).
The car was eventually phased out in 1960, after
being usurped as the flagship car by the Adventurer
in 1957. In that year the Fireflite got a redesign
by Chrysler (which owned Desoto). The tail fins became
more functional, stabilizing the car at higher speeds.
You can still find these cars popping up on eBay,
along with plenty of parts, both original and aftermarket.
