The Dakota is a popular mid-size truck from Dodge.
It has been sold since 1987 despite considerable
criticism from magazine reviewers.

The Dakota has been around for 20 years, yet it has
only been nominated for North American Truck of the
Year once, in 2000. There are only so many trucks
in that category, yet the Dakota has just one nomination. It
has body-on-frame construction with a live axle rear
end. It was also the first work truck to feature
rack and pinion steering. With a V8 engine option,
it is the only mid-size truck with that choice. The
first generation of this truck included a special
edition Shelby Dakota, which carried the name of
famed car builder/designer Carroll Shelby. Four wheel
drive was only available on the V6 versions of these
early Dakotas, not on the straight 4s. The sport
package sold first in 1988 offered 2wd or 4wd. It
the 1990s it began to look more like the larger Ram
trucks, and in the late 90s it adopted the Durango
platform. Since 2005, it has gone back to its own
platform. You can find plenty of these trucks on
the used market, and despite poor reviews on some
years they are still very hard working trucks. I
would never recommend buying one new, but you can
find a used truck on eBay for very cheap, and it
should last you a while. In addition, tons of cheap
Dakota parts are all over the market (once again,
EBAY!).
