The Diplomat was sold from 1977 until 1989 and was
a replacement for the Coronet, although it was actually
sold as a Coronet in the Columbian market.

This midsize car was nearly twins with the Chrysler
LeBaron and after 1982 the Plymouth Gran Fury. The
Diplomat name was also used by Dodge from 1950 until
1954 and on certain export DeSoto models. The 1977
version was based on the Aspen F body platform,
although its platform was officially an M body, which
was closely related. Although most common as a four
door sedan, it was also available as a coupe and
even a station wagon. The most common engine was
a 225 cubic inch V6, although the 318 cubic inch
V8 was very popular among police fleets. It was still
used by many police departments after the model was
discontinued, and was also a hit with taxi cab companies.
It was replaced by the Monaco. You can still find
Diplomats on the used car market, although you'll
have to look very hard. There are usually several
listed on eBay. As it shared a platform with many
popular Chrysler family vehicles, there is an abundance
of used parts available on the auction site. |
