Using the front engine front wheel drive LH platform,
the Intrepid's design was Italian-inspired. Its look
was considered sporty when it made its way to dealerships
for the 1993 model year. The ES model also offered
sportier options, such as 16-inch wheels with better
tires and four wheel disc brakes.
The suspension was also stiffer for more comfortable
aggressive driving. There was also an antilock brake
option, along with a 3.5 L SOHC engine option, which
offered maximum output of 214 horsepower. The best
engine on the second generation models, sold from
1998 until 2004, was the 3.5L V6 which could make
242 hp. This engine was available on the R/T model.
The SXT sold in 2003 had a similar engine that could
make 250hp, considerable power even for a 4 door
sedan. Although not as reliable as their counterparts
from Toyota and Honda, if you're looking for a cheap
but powerful used car the Intrepid is a good car
for the job. There are plenty of used and aftermarket
parts available out there if you're looking to "fix"
one up. I've heard of someone putting a 5.8L V8 in
the 1997 model, so there's obviously lots of room
for tinkering. If you're looking to buy a used Intrepid,
I'd suggest checking on eBay first. They tend to
sell much cheaper on there, and it's really not any
riskier than buying off a used car dealer in your
hometown. |
