The 250 was made by Ferrari during the 1950's and
1960's, and is one of the most renowned vintage sports
car models. It became a part of pop culture when
a 1962 Ferrari 250 California Spyder was used in
the movie Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

Although less known by the general public, car collectors
instantly recognize another 250 model from 1962:
the
250 GTO. It is considered by many to be the quintessential
Ferrari. Although there were some significant changes
to the 250 line during its years of production, which
were from 1953 until 1964, most used one of two wheelbases,
designated as SWB for short wheel base, which was
used in most convertibles, and LWB for long wheel
base, used in the coupes. The Columbo Type 125 V12
engine was not very large at 2963cc, but it made
up for its lack of size with a very high power-to-weight
ratio. It made 280 horsepower. These models had many
different designations, such as GT Lusso, GT/E, GT
Spyder California, GT Berlinetta, Cabriolet, GT Boana,
Ellena, Europa, Testa Rossa, Monza, and several others.
If you are looking to buy one, good luck. I suggest
looking in Hemmings each month. There are usually
some at the semi-annual Barrett-Jackson auctions.
You might even see one pop up on eBay from time to
time. |
