The 550 was sold from 1996 until 2001 and came in
2 different models: the Maranella and Barchetta.
It was an upscale front engine car, which is not
common among Ferrari models.

With a 5.5L V12 engine, this car could really move.
Unlike some Ferraris, the 550 featured a spacious
luxury interior and enough room in the rear trunk
to actually store something other than driving gloves,
like maybe a set of golf clubs. The Barchetta model
might be called a convertible by those who just seeing
it passing on the street, but it is truly a roadster,
and no official top was made available. The soft
top was only supposed to be used when it was raining,
and the owner's manual noted that it should not be
used at speeds over 70 mph. This was a car that would
have no problem reaching that speed, even in a lower
gear. It could reach speeds up to 199 mph, and a
0-100 km/h time of 4.5 seconds. Total production
on those roadsters reached 448, 4 more than expected
because of Japanese superstition (I'm no expert here,
but I'm pretty sure 4 is a death number or something
like that).
You can still find these cars at upscale dealerships,
although they will never be common anywhere. There
are usually a couple listed on eBay, of all places,
and usually for less than you'd pay at a dealer or
car broker. |
