This car was built with one purpose in mind: to beat
the Porsche 959. Enzo Ferrari was 90 years old, and
he had become very aggitated at the idea of his car
company taking a back seat in performance racing
from the likes of a German manufacturer like Porsche.
He accomplished that goal, as the F40 had a 0-60
time of 3.2 seconds, slightly faster than the Porsche.
It also reached a top speed of 201 mph, a speed that
would remain a record for a production car for 2
years before being bested by the RUF CTR Yellowbird,
a car derived from a Porsche 930.
The retail price for the very rare F40 was $500,000,
although some collectors were paying as much as $1.6
million. Today, they typically sell for around their
original retail price of $500,000. Top Gear host
Jeremy Clarkson has listed this car as his favorite
supercar. You'd be lucky to find one of these for
sale, but they do pop up on eBay a few times each
year. You can also find posters and models of this
car on eBay.
