In the summer of 1985, Ford introduced their first attempt at a minivan, the 1986 Ford Aerostar. It may have technically been a mid-sized van and it was grossly underpowered and a bit ugly, but American embraced this minivan as their own, and it stuck around for 11 years.

Packed with a whopping 100 horsepower Lima inline 4 engine, the Aerostar did its best to move, and not worry about going fast. There was a V6 Cologne engine upgrade, although it only offered 115 horsepower. Later models came with a 145hp V6 Vulcan and a 4.0L Cologne V6 with 155hp. The Aerostar managed to win Motor Trend's Truck of the Year in 1990, which surely made many truck owners angry. It may not have looked like a manly truck made for hauling big debris out the woods, but it was built on a truck platform, which qualified it for the award. I guess that shows how crappy trucks were at the time. Ford oftened compared this vehicle to the Space Shuttle due to its front end design. From the side angle, I can kind of see it. It's certainly not something anyone from NASA would drive though. Despite all the nasty things I've said about this minivan, they actually were fairly reliable, and I still see them on the streets today, a full decade after they went out of production. They sold well enough that you can find plenty of them on the used market, and parts are abundant. You can find them on internet auction sites like eBay. Make sure to check what shipping costs before bidding.
