From 1974 until 1976, Ford made a mid-size luxury thing called the Elite. With its many ridges and aggressive style, it reminds me of both the Homer Simpson car and that station wagon from National Lampoon's Vacation. Of course, that's what makes this car totally awesome.

Though it was considered its own model line, the Elite started out as a sub-model of the Torino. A script on the side of the Elite read "Gran Torino Elite". Anyone registering this car would find that it was considered a Gran Torino by the DMV. In 1975 and 1976 it would be considered its own car. This car actually sold quite well during all three years of production. It had a 351W V8, referred as the Cleveland engine. 3 speed automatic transmission, power brakes, and power steering were all standard on this pseudo-luxury car. Options included a 400 and 460 V8 engine and power glass moonroof. If you're looking to buy a used one, you'll probably find that the 351W engine is easier to work on, and more mechanics are familiar with it, although the other engines won't require a Ford expert. The bigger engines also tend to be rarer. Although not quite considered a classic at this time, you'll probably get higher resale if you buy an Elite with the largest engine and all the options available, especially the moonroof. You'll often find a variety of these cars for sale on eBay.
