There were a total of 3 generations of this car. They ran from 1981 - 1990, 1991 - 1996, and 1997 - 2002. Besides the sedan, hatchback, and wagon models, there was also a performance model called the ZX2. They featured the Zetec DOHC I4 engine, and they actually stuck around even after the Escort name was dropped. A ZX2 S/R model was also made in the late 90's. The S/R stood for Street Racer, and it was designed for the custom racing car scene, although it never became as popular as the Honda Civics and Toyota Celicas in those groups.
