Outside of the United States, the Santa Fe gets crushed by competitors, particularly the Toyota RAV4.
Engine options on the first generation included the Delta V6 and the larger Alpha V6, along with the D4 Diesel I4, which was not sold in the U.S. The second generation models, which were first sold for the 2007 model year, included V6 engines ranging up to 242 horsepower, and once again a diesel engine not sold in this country.
The newly redesigned Santa Fe looks a lot like the RAV4. If I were a lawyer for Toyota, I'd be looking into it. The retail price on the two wheel drive GLS is just $21,000, while a fully loaded limited AWD model with both the ultimate and touring packages would set you back about $32,500.
These are available on the used car market. You can get deep discounts if you know where to look. Try eBay. Look for auctions that end at weird hours, like 2:00 in the afternoon on a work day or 3am on a Sunday morning. Those auctions tend to not get a last second surge of bidders.
