The Impulse was also sold as a Geo Storm during its second generation. Although many people may knock the Isuzu and Geo brands, the engine used in 2nd gen models is the type of engine used in modern Lotus Elans.
Prior to this car, Isuzu made another sporty compact called the 117 Coupe. The design of that car needed major updating, and the Impulse was created. The wedge shape of the Impulse impressed Isuzu executives so much that it was fast-tracked into production less than 48 hours after it was introduced to the public.
Early engine options were weak. By 1985, turbo models were offered as options.
Although not technically a new generation, major changes were made to this car in 1988. The engines were made more powerful, and a Lotus-tuned suspension became standard. In fact, everything came standard on these cars. There were only two options: turbo or not turbo.
Some special editions were made of the Impulse: the RS in 1987 and the 1989 Special Edition Impulse, which included some upgraded wheels and trim.
These cars are out there on the used car market, but are not very common. Look for them in eBay listings, along with any parts that you might need. I suggest a 1988 or later model, but if you're looking for an earlier one I'm not going to stop you. You might have more automotive expertise than I do.
