This was a pioneer vehicle. It had four wheel drive, but also independent front suspension and automatic transmission. Power steering was also an option. These features were not available on other offroad type vehicles of the time.
The first Wagoneer was made when Jeep was still owned by Kaiser Industries, and it was still made decades later when the company was owned by AMC and then DaimlerChrysler. It was the only vehicle to span this entire gap.
The Wagoneer had a variation in the late 1960's that would become known as the first luxury SUV, now popular with modern day hip hop culture. The Super Wagoneer was made from 1966 until 1969. It had a 350 cubic inch Buick V8 engine.
Whether you are looking for an XJ, SJ, or ZJ version of the Wagoneer, you can find them all on the used market. They're too old for your dealer's lot, but you will find them listed on eBay.
