The Spectra has been through two generations. The first lasted from 2000 until 2004. It was sold with 3 trim lines. They were the S, SX, and GSX, listed from base to top of the line.

The second generation for 2005 featured a major redesign and a switch of platforms. The Spectra now shares a platform with the Hyundai Elantra. It's sold with a couple engine options in the United States, both I4's. The top one makes 138 horsepower.

All Spectras have been sold with either a 5 speed manual or 4 speed automatic transmission.

The new Spectra hatchbacks have been renamed the Spectra5.

This car has been the butt of jokes on Top Gear, where they tested its ability to tow after it was awarded Tow Car of the Year in 2006. Needless to say, they did a good job of wearing one out on one roadtrip.
