There have been two generations of the Freelander. The first generation was produced from 1996 until 2006. It was sold as a two or four door model with a 5 speed automatic transmission. The engine was either a 1.8L K-series or a 2.5L KV6 making 174 horsepower.
The Freelander first sold in 2007 is also known as the LR2 in the U.S. market. The 2008 model has a base price of $34,700, not bad for a luxury SUV.
The new Freelander is based on a platform developed by Ford. Ford currently owns Land Rover. The new model has better clearance for improved offroad capability compared to the previous model. The new engine is an I6 making 230 horsepower and it gets paired with a 6 speed automatic transmission.
These SUVs can be expensive when bought new with lots of options, but they are a downright steal on the used market, although not easy to find. If you came here searching for one, I suggest you start by looking at the eBay listings for the Freelander.
