The Range Rover Sport is only sold as a 5 door vehicle. Unlike the early Rovers that were derived from military vehicles, the Rover Sport is a pure luxury SUV with a 6 speed automatic transmission being the standard and only option. The Jaguar AJ-V8 is the only engine sold with this vehicle at this time, but expect more engine choices in the near future.

Because it is based on the Discovery, the Rover Sport has very impressive offroad capabilities. Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson tested one against a Challenger 2 tank to see how it stood up on hilly and rocky surfaces. The Range Rover Sport did just fine in the skirmish.

Environmental groups are not happy with this vehicle due to its very low fuel efficiency. It gets about 16 miles per gallon, although under some circumstances it will drop to around 10. That means it guzzles gas about as much as some of America's largest SUVs.

These vehicles have a hefty retail price. You can save a lot of money buying them used. They will start showing up on the used market shortly, as they tend to be bought by luxury buyers who want a new car every two years. That's good news if you don't mind buying a two year old car for a fraction of the price of a new one. Keep checking eBay listings to see if any pop up.
