Sustaining what, and for whom?
By Tom PhilpottCargill and The Nature Conservancy (TNC) have a long-standing relationship dating back to the 1980s. Cargill and TNC share a mutual interest in developing science-based, improved agricultural management practices that guarantee the productivity and enduring health of the ecosystem and landscape. -- From a joint Cargill/TNC document [PDF] dated February 2006 --- In her new book Green Inc., Christine MacDonald argues that that large environmental NGOs have compromised their ag

What price, carbon?
By Sean Casten Two troubling things I heard last week: The on-going question about what our next president will sacrifice in the name of the economy. If the financial crisis has taught us nothing else, it is that federal coffers are not infinite, and something will inevitably give. At a panel on GHG policy in Washington, congressional staffers for Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.) and Rep. Jay Inslee (D-Wash.) conceded that the RGGI auction -- and specifically, the $40 million raised for the northe

ReGeneration Roadtrip: Yeah ... but is it art?
By Sarah van Schagen This is a guest post from my travel partner, Todd Dwyer, head blogger for Dell's ReGeneration.org. ----- After our visit to the amazing Philip Merrill Environmental Center in Annapolis, Maryland, Sarah and I hopped in our trusty steed, Cletus the Prius, for a drive to the Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts in search of the nature of art and the art of nature. Although the Wolf Trap Center is located in Vienna, Virginia, our contact, Chris Guerre, requested

Selling the Concept
Out here in Hollywood, the land of make-believe, we know all about the willing suspension of disbelief. It a bargain the audience makes with you – they know those are actors on the screen, not the real people, and most likely on a sound-stage in front of green-screen and not floating in a lifeboat in the North Atlantic or whatever, but they’re willing to forget all that play along, to suspend their disbelief, if you scare them, or move them to tears, or make them laugh, or something entertaini

How forgiving are you, really?
How forgiving are you, really? October 6th, 2008 by Cat On Dec. 10, 2003 the Whitaker family of Sugar Land, Texas returned home from a dinner. Their oldest son, Bart, had just graduated from college. His father, Kent, gave him a Rolex watch. When they opened the door, Tricia and her youngest son, Kevin, were immediately shot in their chests by a gunman who had been waiting inside the house. Kent ran to the door to see what had happened and was shot in the shoulder. Bart, who ran into the livi

D-day - Bayeux, Normandy, France
Jump to the full entry & travel map Bayeux, Normandy, France An early start today as we had a 4 hour drive up to Normandy before we even got to our first destination for the day. Not surprisingly in this part of France, all major roads lead to Paris and despite asking Tom to take us another way, we realised too late that we were headed for the Peripherique around Paris. This was the point at which Matt and Tom ceased to be friends. It had been brewing for a while but I had visions of havi

Down for Maintenance
Twitter scheduled a little maintenance window tonight. It didn’t last long and I sure successfully improved something. I’m hopeful I’ll be able to say the same about my own downtime. Twitter’s downtime has a new look For me, writing is about rhythm and energy. Lately, both have been necessarily focused on academic work and the initial drafts of my first book. The schedule has been light on sleep and heavy on slowly crafting words for publication. By the time I get back to the browser bookmar

Sir Roger Penrose Gives Me Inspiration To Calculate
I heard Sir Roger Penrose give a talk at the Perimeter Institute, Grand Opening 4 years ago. Finally, just last week, the esteemed Oxford physicist and I were re-united at last. Free tickets sold out almost instantly, but there's no chance I could let such a celebrity parade across my front lawn without witnessing it first hand. Especially since it's good blog material, and Jacks of Science is essentially the Perez Hilton of Science (slogan trademark pending). Penrose spoke overtime on the

What bothers me most about the Ayers line of attack
What bothers me most about the Ayers line of attack is that it's an attack on American jurisprudence at its most fundamental. We're not talking about upper-court Constitutional shennanigans; this is the bedrock law-of-the-land kind of thing. Ayers got off on a technicality. The prosecutors were so go-hung to get him they apparently broke the rules, and he got off with little more than a slap on the wrist. I hate to say this but, that is as it should be. Ayers committed crimes, but pursuit of ju

Dorm access road to cost $2m
Dorm access road to cost $2m But Tai Hwan Gardens residents say plan pushes problem to them By Lim Wei Chean IT IS a $2 million compromise that the Government has worked out to appease Serangoon Gardens residents unhappy over the foreign worker dormitory to come up in their neighbourhood. This is what it would cost to build the 400m access road to the dorm, which will occupy the old Serangoon Gardens Technical School premises. A National Development Ministry spokesman, responding to St

CBB Column: Kentucky a Rising power in the SEC?
New Head Coach Gary Henderson (UK Athletics Photo) The University of Kentucky had a great season in 2008 where they went 44-19. They ended up finishing in 3rd place in the Eastern Division in the SEC with a conference record of 16-14. The NCAA Baseball committee rewarded the team with the third seed in the Ann Arbor Regional.

You no buy, I cry - Siem Reap, Cambodia
Jump to the full entry & travel map Siem Reap, Cambodia When you visit Cambodia it's hard to avoid museums and memorials about the genocide that only finally came to an end in 1998 when the civil war finished and Pol Pot died. What we've found even more terrifying is that it was happening in our lifetime so we were pleased to be able to give something back here by spending two weeks starting the building work for a new orphanage and teaching English to some of the orphans. Highlights for
