The first generation of the SC featured the SC 300, the SC 400, and the SC 430. This generation lasted from 1991 until 2000. Engine options were an I6 or a V8, depending on the model. The transmission options were a 5 speed manual and the less popular 4 speed automatic. These cars were a major investment for Toyota. They spent $400 million on the development of the engine alone.
The second generation, sold since 2002, featured a major redesign. The car is now only sold as a 2 door coupe convertible. The SC 430 comes with a 4.3 liter V8 engine. The transmission is an all new 6 speed automatic. The performance figures are pretty good, with a 0 to 60 time of just 6 seconds.
The latest SC 430 has received rave reviews from most, although not from Top Gear's Jeremy Clarkson, who apparently faulted the car for being too quiet. Maybe someone should have torn off the exhaust system before his test drive. The quality of the SC's build is second to none. It has won JD Power & Associates Initial Quality Survey, making it the highest quality car coming off the dealer lot, unlike my Ford, which struggled with the 2.5 mile drive home.
These cars are a bit rare to find on the used car market... unless you know where to look. Forget about going to those seedy dealer lots with the guy with the slicked back hair. Try looking online on eBay. They have a ton of listings for luxury cars like the SC 430. |
