The Merak was sold with two engines: the 2 liter V6 and the 3 liter V6. This engine was small enough to make room in the back of this car for a couple of seats for two children or very small adults.
The Merak SS was first sold in 1976 and it had a little more power than the standard version. The top speed on this car was 152 miles per hour. Only 652 of them were produced, making them a favorite among Maserati collectors.
The smaller 2 liter engine was introduced in 1977 in the car badged as the Merak 2000. This car was sold for the Italian market, where a new law taxed vehicles with big engines.
Jeremy Clarkson drove one of these cars for an episode of Top Gear. The engine failed during testing, and he later learned that what he thought was a Merak SS was actually just the standard version with an SS sticker badge. He paid just 7000 pounds for this car.
This is one of the more affordable Maseratis, but it's still not very common. You can probably find one or two listed on eBay right now, otherwise I wouldn't get my hopes up that the local used car dealer is going to get one in.
