The Renesis rotary engine is front mounted but in a mid position to allow for very close to 50:50 weight distribution front to rear. The RX-8, like other cars in the RX series, is a rear wheel drive.
This is a very lightweight vehicle considering its power, making it very sporty. Aluminum and carbon fiber parts reduce weight on the body and even on mechanical components like the driveshaft.
Although this car does have 4 doors, the rear doors are freestyle, meaning the hinge is behind the door towards the rear and they can only be opened if the front door is opened first.
There are several different versions of this car that have been sold in the US market. The Mazdaspeed version of the RX-8 is a 2008 model that features a stronger engine than the standard model and more luxury options.
These cars are out there on the used market, although not likely to be found on your standard used car lot. They maintain their value quite well, and most used RX-8's will be sold through dealer or directly from one private seller to a private buyer. You can find them listed on eBay, along with hundreds of listings for aftermarket parts and various mods.
