The first generation Eclipse was sold from 1990 to 1994. There were all 3 door hatchbacks with either front wheel or four wheel drive. Trim levels included Base, GS, GS DOHC, GS-T, and GSX. The GSX was the top model with a turbocharged DOHC engine. It made over double the horsepower of the base model, which shows what a wide range of power these cars had depending on the model and trim. All the engines may have been I4's, but they were not all equal.
The second generation model, which was also sold in the United States as the Eagle Talon, was sold within the model years of 1995 to 1999. A two door convertible was added to the 3 door hatchback in the lineup. Other additions included the RS trim and the GS Spyder and GS-T Spyder trim. The turbocharged engine in the GSX could now make 210 horsepower. That trim level was equal to the Eagle Talon TSi AWD.
The GSX trim was dropped for the third generation Eclipse. That meant the end of the AWD option on these cars, temporarily at least.
The fourth generation model has been on sale since 2006. The top model Eclipse GT Spyder now has an engine that makes an impressive 263 horsepower.
These cars are popular with the customizing and modding community. Whether you already own one that you want to add custom mods to, or you want to buy a used Eclipse for cheap, your best friend is going to be eBay. You'll get great prices on some decent cars.
