This was the first SUV that Nissan would market to the truly adventurous crowd. This was the SUV that was intended to go offroad and carry all the supplies that an outdoorsman might need.
There have been two generations of the Xterra, although the first generation was split between two models that are almost different enough to call separate generations.
The first generation Xterra was sold from 2000 through 2004. The base model was an XE with a four cylinder engine. It was manual transmission with no automatic option. The engine could be upgraded to a V6. The SE added a sunroof and little else for an extra $2,000.
The 2002 Xterra was given some more modern features and a Roots Type Supercharged V6 was added to the options.
The 2005 Xterra was the first of the second generation. It is larger than the previous models, and it has a bigger engine. The second generation refresh comes in 2009.
These SUVs are already showing up on the used car market. If you are looking to buy a used Xterra, the best place to look is on eBay. You can also buy some Xterra custom mods and upgrades on there. I've seen some very expensive-looking offroad Xterra mods that were done for a lot less than people would guess thanks to getting the parts for much less than retail.
