Jaguar XF: Competition to the 5 Series?
JAGUAR XF: This weekend, as I was walking around a high-end outdoor mall( I think they call them lifestyle malls?) when I came across something I don’t see often: a burgundy 2008 Jaguar XF. The XF was a gorgeous concept design(C-XF was it’s designation) for a mid-size sedan replacement to the archaic, boring S-Type. The designer of the car? Oh just Ian Callum, the guy who gave us the Aston Martin DB7 and Vanquish, and Jag XK. So it’s an attractive car, the pictures don’t do it justice. The

Communication and the Campaign
If Barack Obama is elected President on November 4th, it will be in large part because of his sophisticated communication with the American public. I was in Michigan this past weekend, and drove past the “North Oakland County Victory Office” of the McCain Campaign, just west of Pontiac, twenty miles north of Detroit. A placard near the street read “Get your McCain-Palin lawn signs here!” The building looked like a small bait shop, set back from the road, in the middle of a big parking lot with

2008 Pontiac G8 GT: Details, Pontiac
2008 Pontiac G8 GT: Details, Pontiac I like the G8 so much, I assume Pontiac had been looking at my diary before they built it. It is a very good car. It's taken me a looong time to find something I dislike - and it comes down to this; exposed rear view mirror wires. As I pass the car to the left, about to open the driver's side door, I get a very unflattering view of the G8 - perhaps the only one. It's not a deal breaker but the exposed wires that power OnStar, and the auto-dimming mirror

First Drive: 2009 Volkswagen Routan
First Drive: 2009 Volkswagen Routan World Auto News By kleo. Volkswagen , Car Reviews No Comments Badge engineering. This is the common practice in the automotive industry of taking a vehicle designed for one brand, and tweaking to work for another. But is this a good thing or a bad thing? We all know examples of the Chevy that is also a Pontiac or a Ford that is also a Mercury with little but trim differences. That cynical approach to marketing has led to a tarnished reputation for badge-e

Rundown of five exciting new rides
Let’s take a quick look at a quintet of important, or at least exciting, new rides for 2009. They are the completely redesigned Ford and Dodge full-size pickups, the fabulous 638-horsepower Corvette ZR-I, the nifty Toyota Venza, and a very sporty Pontiac pickup called the G8 ST. With the exception of the Pontiac, which, I’m told, won’t be here until late next year, these vehicles are starting into the showrooms, or will be there shortly.

Some tough decisions coming up: • It’s close, but I think I’ll take Man Man over Jay Reatard next Wednesday. • Look at that shit on the 17th. Four venues competing for the same 50 people who go to shows around here. I may organize a sit-in to protest. You should join me. Not at my house, though. Just stay at yours. It’ll be like we’re both protesting together, but separately. Like the lyrics of that Fivel song. • This Saturday’s Child Bite vs. Mick Bassett dilemma really makes me angry. • D

It's the same old story
I was particularly struck by a passage in David Halberstam’s 1993 book The Fifties, in which he describes a major corporate shift at General Motors. Perhaps it will have some resonance for those of you who have worked at newspapers during the past 15 years. For many GM people the critical moment came in 1958, when Frederic Donner became president. Donner’s roots were in accounting but, unlike Harlow Curtice, who had also been an accountant, Donner was a man who gave off a sense of being intere

Vroom Vroom Vroom: An Australian Import that Isn't Rebadged as a Pontiac
A new car rental website from Australia that throws in a free carbon offset with each transaction hopes to take on the US market with the tenacity of a kangaroo. So far, we like it better than Vegemite. When we first heard about a new car rental website, there was a collective groan in Autopia. "Who can it be now?" we asked. Orbitz, Travelocity, and Expedia each claim a best-rate guarantee and the ability to search multiple rental companies, so yet another car rental site seemed like overki
