Update: Scary backyard bug is a robber fly

Update: Wizzie got back to me with a bug ID. It’s a robber fly. It’s considered only somewhat beneficial because although it attacks and eats bad garden bugs, it also preys on good bugs, including bees. She sent me a link for more info. And one more thing: it will bite if threatened. So if you see one in your yard, don’t mess with it. Does anyone know what kind of bug this is? I looked on a few bug sites but didn’t find anything that looks quite like it. Perhaps it’s a robber fly. Or some
