The Forester is only sold with all wheel drive, which is something that can be said about all Subaru models since the early 1990's.
There have been three generations of the Forester. The first generation lasted from 1997 until 2002, with the first year model only sold in Japan. This car came standard with a 2.0 liter H4 engine, but there were larger 2.5 liter options and a 2.0 liter H4 turbo option.
The second generation model was sold from 2003 until 2008. It came standard with a 2.5 liter H4 boxer engine, but there was a more powerful engine in the XT model that boosted horsepower by 50 horsepower.
The Forester XT is basically the wagon version of the Impreza WRX. It has a turbocharged engine that has been highly-praised in the automotive world. It won International Engine of the Year in 2006.
2009 is the first year of the new third generation Subaru Forester. Look for some major upgrades in features, design, and engine options.
The Forester is not too hard to find on the used car market. I usually check KBB value first, and then I see what they are selling for on eBay. If I can't find a similar deal on the used car lots in my area, I'll just buy off of eBay. It's not nearly as difficult as some people seem to think, and with CarFax and seller feedback, it's easy to make sure you aren't getting ripped off.
