There have been 9 generations of the Land Cruiser. They were given the following series designations:
-
BJ and FJ 1951 - 1955
- 20 Series 1955 - 1960
- 40 Series 1960 - 1984
- Model 55 and 56 1972 - 1980
- 60 Series 1980 - 1990
- 70 Series 1984 - present
- 80 Series 1990 - 1997
- 100 Series 1998 - 2007
- 200 Series 2008 -
Some of the body types the Land Cruiser was sold as in the early years include 2 door softtop, 2 door hardtop, 2 door pickup truck, and 4 door station wagon.
Despite the size and offroad capabilities of the Land Cruiser, it has generally been sold with a 6 cylinder engine until the most recent models (since 1998). The latest generation is all V8 engines, including a V8 diesel.
The Land Cruiser is unique in that the beginning of a new generation does not mean the end of the previous generation. The 6th and 7th generations, for instance, are still produced and sold in Africa and South America. If you ever go on safari, you might even find yourself riding in a brand new one. That's pretty cool, considering they haven't been sold new in the United States for decades.
If you are looking for a used Toyota Land Cruiser, the first place I'd look is on eBay. They would have models from the various generations listed there, along with a myriad of parts that have been sold with the Land Cruiser. The number of ways that you can modify a Land Cruiser are almost limitless, it seems. |
