The first generation Matrix was sold for the 2003 thru 2008 model years. The Matrix is sold with a choice of two motors: the 1.8 liter I4 borrowed from the Toyota Corolla, and the 1.8 liter I4 engine from the Toyota Celica GT-S. The latter produces about 38 more horsepower than the former and is featured on the Matrix XRS performance model with all wheel drive. The base Matrix has front wheel drive.
The second generation Toyota Matrix was introduced as the SEMA show in October of 2007. It made its way to dealer lots by February 2008 as a 2009. The trim lines on the new Matrix are Standard, S, and XRS. The only all wheel drive option will be on the Matrix S with the 4 speed automatic transmission.
The Matrix has been a success in the United States. Combining some performance features and a utilitarian body size, I think it's fair to assume that the Matrix will be around for quite some time.
The Toyota Matrix is already showing up on the used car market. To find the best deals, I suggest trying to buy your next Matrix on eBay. There are also some pretty trick parts on there if you're looking to mod it out, which I know a lot of you are.
