The first generation Toyota Tacoma was sold from 1995 until 2004. It was the same truck that is sold in other markets as the Toyota Hilux. The Hilux was sold in the United States prior to 1995 using the simple name "Toyota pickup". Engines on these trucks ranged from a rather meek 2.4 liter I4 up to a 3.4 liter V6.
The Tacoma sold quite well at first. It was priced below many other compact pickup trucks, and American truck buyers were starting to warm up to the idea of buying a truck from a Japanese company, thanks in large part to the high failure rate of American trucks.
A four dour crew cab option was added in 2001 to compliment the 2 door base truck body configuration. That was the same year Toyota introduced the S-runner performance trim package with the V6 engine.
The second generation Toyota Tacoma was much bigger than the previous model, and it was loaded with options. There were a whopping 18 different configurations that this truck could be bought in, including three cab configurations, two engines, two bed lengths, and four transmissions. Like Burger King's Whopper, you could "have it your way" with the Tacoma.
The X-Runner extended cab Tacoma is a popular performance trim sold on second gen Tacomas.
Expect to see the Tacoma surpass the Ford Ranger in sales in the near future, if they haven't already.
There are plenty of used Toyota Tacomas out there on the used truck market. With so much supply, it's easy to shop around for the best price on these trucks and their parts. I'd check out eBay before going anywhere else. It's easy, and I'm lazy.
