The Volvo 740 was sold in the U.S. as a 4 door sedan and a 5 door station wagon. They were known at the Volvo factory as the 744 and 745, respectively, but still sold to the public as a 740.
There are too many engines that were sold with the 740 to list here. They ranged from the naturally aspirated to the turbocharged. The B230 and all of its variations were the most common engine sold with the 740. These engines would live on after the 740 was discontinued in the Volvo 940, which was basically the same car.
Like many Volvos from its era, the Volvo 740 was built like a tank. Not only were these cars very safe, but they were also very reliable. You won't find too many 740's in a junk yard, because most of them are still on the road today, often with odometers reading past 250,000 miles.
Since Volvo 740's are so reliable, they make a great choice for a used car purchase and they also happen to be very common on the used car market. Lots of supply and not much demand for these less-than-stylish cars means great deals for those looking for a 740. Try looking on eBay for some steals.
