The first generation S80 was sold from 1997 until
2006. It came standard with an I5 engine, with the top model S80 T6 getting a twin turbocharged I6. That engine could make 268 horsepower. An I5 turbodiesel is also sold in some markets.
The second generation S80 features many upgrades on the interior and many more options. The range of engines is now far greater, extending from a 2.0 liter I4 up to a 4.4 liter Volvo Yamaha V8. Aside from better performance on the high end, the Volvo S80 is just about the safest car in the world at the moment.
Some cool features on the Volvo S80 include the personal car communicator, or PCC, which tells the driver the security level of the car. It even warns the driver if there is someone hiding in the car by detecting the presence of a heartbeat. I'm not sure how useful that feature is, but Volvo probably knows how imaginative Americans get when they are scared, and my fellow Americans have never been as scared of everything as they are now.
The top engine on the current S80 makes about 311 horsepower. With power like that, expect this car to remain a favorite among young executives and businessmen for years to come.
There are a few places to buy a used Volvo S80 without going to some shady dealership (frankly, I consider them all shady, because they always try to steer me away from what I tell them I want to buy). EBay is a sure bet for at least dozen S80 listings at any given time. It's the first place I'd check. |
